Eligibility & Fees

We offer membership options for practicing and non-practicing genetic counsellors, genetic nurses, genetic counselling students, and other professionals interested in genetic counselling.

Full members  $150

  • Have a diploma, Master’s or PhD from a genetic counselling program, OR
  • Are a Registered Nurse or has a degree in a related field and has at least one year of recent experience providing genetic counselling
  • Do not need to be certified by the CBGC (Canadian Board of Genetic Counselling).
  • Can vote, serve on the Board of Directors, and serve as chairs of committees

Full  members- New Grad Discount  $75 (NEW! - Effective as of 2022)

  • Students who graduate from an MSc genetic counselling training program and apply for Full membership within 2 years of graduation are eligible for a one-time $75 discount on their Full category membership.**
  • Do not need to be certified by the CBGC (Canadian Board of Genetic Counselling).
  • ​Can vote, serve on the Board of Directors, and serve as chairs of committees
    ** Example:  If you graduated Dec. 15, 2022 you can apply for the Full membership discount up until Dec. 15, 2024.  If your application is submitted after Dec. 15, 2024 the regular Full membership rate ($150) would apply.
  • Members are eligible for the New Grad Discount only once.  If you previously utilized the discount, the next year you will be required to pay the Full member price. 

Associate members   $150

  • Applicants whose interests focus on genetic counselling but who are not eligible for or do not desire full membership or student membership
  • This may include physicians and other health care providers
  • May not vote, serve on the Board of Directors, or serve as chairs of committees

Student members   $40

  • Applicants who are enrolled and actively completing coursework in an MSc genetic counselling training program, OR
  • Full/Associate members who return to school full-time to pursue additional education (provided they are active students at the time of membership renewal)
  • May not vote or serve as chairs of committees.

Emeritus members   $65

  • Members who have paid full CAGC membership dues for a minimum of ten years (need not be consecutive) AND are no longer employed as genetic counsellors
  • May not vote, serve on the Board of Directors, or serve as chairs of committees


Membership renewal occurs on July 1st of each year. As noted on our Join/Renew page, Full and Associate members will be able to renew with a discounted early bird rate (subject to change with BoD approval) during the early renewal period.  After this time the full amount above will apply.

Note that membership dues are not pro-rated and refunds will not be provided for those who join part way through the membership year.
